Lecture Beijing: Ancient City, Modern Outlook
All-Day Seminar
Beijing is a city, an idea, a dream, an experiment-- and soon it will be the site of one of the most elaborate sports events ever, the 2008 summer Olympics. As China began its march toward modernization in the 19th century, Beijing came to symbolize the national aspirations and collective conscience of the Chinese people. In today's seminar, Robert Daly (director of the Institute of Global Chinese Affairs, University of Maryland) discusses the rich history and culture of one of the world's great cities.
